A belated word about Charlie Hebdo.
It is a publication run by lefties with only a tenuous grasp of reality, and moreover these were people who set out of offend others. I share almost nothing in terms of world view with the victims who were murdered and guess what... all of that is UTTERLY irrelevant. If ever there was a time to go full on Voltaire, this is it.
Anyone who says "it was terrible what happened to the Charlie Hebdo people but..." does not give a damn about liberty or indeed modern civilisation at all. There. can. be. no. "but". Because if there is, then you are a tacit apologist for the murderers. Is that harsh? Are you offended? Do you think I give a fuck if you are?
The very essence of a civilised society is to tolerate people you do NOT agree with, just so long as they will also tolerate you.
And that is why the only way to really express resistance is not just to show sympathy and shock over this barbaric attack, but to draw pictures of Mohammed until the very internet runs out of pixels. If you are not free to express yourself because someone else is offended, then you are not free, it is really that simple. I would draw a MoToon myself if I was not utterly inept at drawing anything, so all I can do is use words.
It is not enough to say "Je Suis Charlie"... because unless you are willing to offend, and to tolerate being offended, then no, you are not Charlie. Down with the tyranny of offence. A bas la tyrannie de l'offense.
